Originally slated for a 2021 release, Sony Santa Monica pushed the game back to an unspecified date, with director Cory Barlog stating that it would release when it was ready. How the reveal of who Atreus actually is (Loki) will impact this dynamic should play heavily into Sony Santa Monica’s interpretation of Norse mythology. While Thor was mentioned in the original God of War, he wasn’t ever someone you met on the journey. This showed a figure standing outside of their home, a bolt of lightning, and a famous hammer. No divine side, race, or tribe can claim absolute moral authority, and the game plays with our. Its story was previously teased in a post-credits scene players receive once returning to Kratos and Atreus’ home after finishing the game. The truly fun part of the story of God of War for Norse nerds is the destabilising moral relativism. It will continue the story of Kratos and his son, Atreus. The long awaited title was first revealed last year with nothing more than a logo and the words “Ragnarok is coming.” Because of this teaser, many have taken to calling it God of War: Ragnarok, though Sony hadn’t officially titled the game anything more than the “next God of War” until today. The post-show (below), also confirmed that Cory Barlog stepped away from the Director role on Ragnarok, but he’s working on something else he’s not talking about just yet.
There’s also Tyr, the Norse God of War, who is much taller than Kratos, and it will be curious to see how they clash. Odin and Thor are also confirmed to play enormous roles as the Norse Saga closes out.
They also confirmed that Ragnarok, the event, will happen in this game.
Herman Hulst later said during the post-show that God of War Ragnarok is the “finale of the Norse Saga” of God of War, which hints at big things to come for the series in the future.
